Well, friends, we meet again! This time the world is a bit different than it was when I last posted. People are behaving a bit...differently. Would you agree? It's interesting to see the shift in humanity in response to a global event such as COVID-19. It really puts thing into perspective when we all become vulnerable to experiencing some level of impact by the same threat. Makes the world seem a bit smaller; makes our feelings...feel a bit more important! Well, this is as good a time as any to discuss our own feelings and the feelings of others. It really sets the stage for a meaningful discussion about something many of us have a hard time understanding -- empathy!
By the way...quick shout out to any new guests, we're happy to have you! If you haven't read through previous Waypoints, definitely go check them out! Lastly, if you haven't subscribed to my website, be sure to do that so you can get the FREE downloadable e-workbook, Way Points | A GPS For Life. It follows along the same route we are taking on our personal growth journey throughout 2020. It will serve you well!
OK! We're ready for Waypoint 4 - Empathy!
Empathy is often confusing for people. It doesn't mean you feel sorry for others; it's about recognizing their emotions, in some cases feeling what they feel, and seeing their situation from their perspective. It allows you to connect with someone in an emotional state other than your own, through compassion and understanding.
"The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner" (Merriam-Webster)
Y'all, did you get that? When we're experiencing empathy, or being empathetic towards another human being, we're feeling the emotions they're displaying or describing...which means we're putting ourselves in their shoes and connecting with them on an emotional level. That's deep, y'all! Some people don't like this level of vulnerability. It feels weird or scary, or even unnatural. This may look differently for different people, but guess what? We're all different! (Learn more about how here!)
Sometimes I get tired of typing (I do A LOT of typing); so, today, I thought I'd just break it down real basic...from the comfort of my home (bed) and talk all things EMPATHY!
Grab a coffee, grab a snack, put your feet up and click PLAY!

Cheers to growth!
Keep learning and growing, friends! See you at Waypoint 5 - Emotional Intelligence on May 1st.
